Itunes isn’t available for Linux yet. There are several other audio player for Linux which can be taken as alternative for iTunes. If you are using iTunes for managing your Iphone, Ipod and Ipad there is a strong reason to install iTunes in Linux for you. You can install iTunes in Linux easily using a application called playonlinux.
Playonlinux is an application which simply allows to install several Windows application in Linux.
Install PlayonLinux on Ubuntu
Open the terminal(CTRL+ALT+T) and run following command to install playonlinux
sudo apt-get install playonlinux
Download PlayonLinux for other Linux distros.
Open playonlinux and Click on install. You will see bunch of application based on category including most popular program, most downloaded, most rated. Type iTunes in the searchbar and you will find the several version of iTunes.
Select the version that you want to install.
You will be informed with version that you are installing and the location of your installation with some warning Click on next to proceed.
PlayonLinux now download the iTunes or ask for the source depending upon the version you have choosen.
You can finally see installation widget for iTunes Click on Next and follow the procedure like installing simple application in windows.
After following all procedure iTunes will be install in your system. You can see the iTunes in your Ubuntu or any other Linux Distribution.
Note: PlayonLinux has some issue with iTunes 10. Therefore you can install iTunes 7. You can use wine to install version 10. But the performance isn’t satisfactory like version 7.

Very nice, but the main reason for using Itunes on Linux is to use an Ipod. It is supposed to work with USB so easily? I’m asking because I couldn’t find a way to make it work.
Works not for me;(
sudo apt-get install playonlinux ;)
I messed up and installed ver. 10. :( How can I remove iTunes & Quick time so I can start over with ver. 7?
Thanks.
Way 1:
If you have install via PlayonLinux Open Play on Linux and you will see Itunes version 10(If installed) Click on remove to completely remove it.
Way 2:
Press Alt+F2 and type “wine uninstaller” Run the program and select Itunes to remove from it .
make sure Alt+f2 shortcut key is enabled(If you are using Gnome-shell).
If using windows makes you feel dirty, try this under Fedora:
yum install gtkpod
Works like a champ with my ipod.
What? I’m not techno lingy. Slow it down and explain.
Hi Taylor,
It is explained with full details. Please tell me in which step you are stuck? Thanks

What’s the error that you are getting? Try installing both iTunes 7 and iTunes 10. If your iPhone is jailbroken then Amarok can sync with iPhones. Here’s the link: http://amarok.kde.org/
Thanks for the post.
I managed to successfully install PlayonLinux and then iTunes 7, but when I tried to open iTunes I got the following message:
“The file “iTunes Library.itl” cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.”
I am using Ubuntu 12.04.
Can anyone suggest a solution to my problem?
Thanks.
Hey, I’m am using Ubuntu 11.10 and I got the same problem as you, Joe.
“The file “iTunes Library.itl” cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.”
So, I removed my previous libraries that I used with Window, and the program won’t open at all. I’m not sure if I would have the same problem with iTunes 10, but it is no longer on the application list in PlayOnLinux. Any help would be appreciated.
Hi Amy,
It should work. Itunes 7 should work on playonlinux. Make sure you are using latest version of playonLinux. If it doesn’t work Try to install with wine 1.5+.
I installed playonlinux using sudo, then it just gives me a EULA screen, with no way to exit, if I close terminal, it kills the program and playonlinux is not installed. How do I get past this???
@David: If you are in Ubuntu/Debian, run this command:
sudo apt-get install playonlinux
Should work fine!
It worked this time!!! I waited a few weeks, there is a problem with Ubuntu, everything doesn’t always work the first time, but it worked this time, I now have itunes 7 installed!
I set up “playonlinux” and typed “itunes” in the search box but nothing came up. Help?
Help – got half way though install of playonlinux and had to terminate session.

osh@josh-HP-Compaq-dx7200-Slim-Tower:~$ sudo apt-get install plyonlinux

Cannot get iTunes working on my Ubuntu 12.04.. what is that? Got in to a rondo, tired spinning (help)
I’m running Ubuntu 12.10 (desktop version) and have installed PlayonLinux and iTunes 7. I want to use it with my Apple TV.
In Sharing tab I have Share My library & share entire library turned on.
In Apple TV tab I have Look for Apple TV’s turned on. However there isn’t an Apple TV showing in the box (The following Apple TV’s..)
I love Apple TV … so changing isn’t an option. Do I have to just go to windows ?
Hey!!! Can I install iTunes 11 too??
I’m using ubuntu 12.04 and I’ve installed wine and playonlinux. It will let me download Itunes7 through playonlinux and setup without problems. But when I try to access Itunes it is often unresponsive or it freezes and wont let me access the Itunes store or sync with my iphone. After a few minutes of Itunes being open a window will pop up saying the program itunes.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. I’ve uninstalled and reintalled itunes multiple times and this problem has continued. Anyone have any idea why this is happening or what I should do? I would hate to have windows just to access itunes
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock – open (11: Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
This message was displayed when i tried to intall itunes in my laptop. When i tried to run the command sudo apt-get install playonlinux
What is the solution
For me it works perfectly. It took 3 hours to load all the library, but still ok.
I’ve also observed that in this example the launch bar looks like Mac OS (screen bottom). I’ve been searching in the internet but none of the instructions found worked. Well, one of them worked but the icons were not centered, they were aligned to the left.
Thanks in advance for your support
Everything’s up and running okay except I get no results when I type iTunes into the search bar… Is there any particular reason for this?
I have Ubuntu 12.04, if that makes any difference.
